just a little OCD

Posted on

As someone who has eight siblings growing up with her, a rather expected question I get asked by people, is how is it like? I’ve answered the question so many times and gave so many different replies each time. Or maybe most of the time, because if I don’t really feel like giving out the details, I simply say, “It’s pretty normal. There are just more people compared to most families I guess.” I tell you, the amount of dosa I’ve gotten from saying that… Normal is an adjective never to be used when describing this family!

Why I give different replies each time is only because I get asked at different times and different things happen between us at different times (so many ‘different’ in one sentece).

For instance, in the morning, we’d be planning for dinner together and the older ones would say, “let adik-adik choose the venue,” how sweet, but I wouldn’t say that so I usually get to choose. And when they don’t like my suggestion, they’ll suggest the places they want to go to.. why did you waste your time even saying that I adik-adik get to pick where we eat. We don’t have to wait too long till the next civil war breaks out and my parents would have to step in. They’ll decide to make the choice and all nine of us know that their selection is really narrowed down. It’s so narrowed that there is only one place to pick from and it has to be Kayu Nasi Kandar. So, if you see us there a lot, you know what led us to it.

We’re all a lot alike but also pretty different from each other. But one thing we all pretty much have in common is that we’re kind of OCD. No surprises there, my mum cleaned a newly bought house and turned it into an office plus warehouse within two days. Of course, with the help from most of the family’s population, but it was her who organised everything, leaving not a single speck of dust in the end. And then there’s also my dad picking hair up from the floor while literally doing ‘the duck walk’ around the living room. Join me anytime to watch him waddle from one corner to the other through the CCTV. I guarantee, you’ll have a good laugh. They’re both so weird. No wonder we’re like this.

My sister, Sara, is not kind of OCD like the rest of us. She’s actually very, very (very very very) OCD. Quite worrying at times, haha! I mean seriously..
